stephanie norris - interior designer

Hello, my name is Stephanie. I am an interior designer who just loves ANYTHING to do with decorating and have an obsession for crafty things and reading inspiring blogs.

I started this blog to share and interact with other people who have a passion for design and creating things.  To me, this is like a dream come true.  It gives me an outlet to share design ideas and inspirations, and to interact with people who have the same passion.

What led me to be a designer:

15 years ago my husband and I had a vision to build a spectacular huge home on a undeveloped hilltop.  We owned 44 acres and had the chance of a lifetime to build our dream home.

We hired an Interior Designer to help us achieve a look that we had seen in all the beautiful magazines and places we visited. She was a very talented Designer; it was my first glimpse into the world of designers and what they do. She gave me invaluable hands on experience of the complicated world of designing a home.  I learned more from her than any class or book on design.

After 3 years of intense planning, re-designing and frustration with this designer, I made a life changing decision. I let the designer go and dove myself into the design world.  It was a huge undertaking since I had no formal training, but I knew I had the talent in me so I just went for it.   I knew this project was too big for one person, so I hired two Interior Designers with whom I could easily work with to assist me.   I spent every waking moment for the next 4 years going over plans, meeting with contractors, faux finishers, tile setters, finished carpenters and trips upon trips to the design centers for fabric and furnishings. Everything  was custom or special order which was time consuming and tedious.

We finally moved into our dream home after those 7 long years in the making. Then 2 years later, our house burned to the ground. It was devastating to say the least.  All of our hard work gone.  We made the decision to rebuild, but this time I was more than ready, armed with the experience to do it faster and more efficiently.  My husband and I wanted to create the exact same house we had before, we wanted to feel that when we moved back, we were moving home.  It was a 24/7 job; we were able to rebuild our same house with much of the same finishes and furnishings, but this time in 2 1/2 years.

During the rebuild of our home, as if I wasn’t busy enough, I decided to get a degree in Interior Design. It was so invigorating to be surrounded by people who had the same passion like myself for design.  With the hands on experience building my own home twice, nothing in design and building ever is the way a book teaches you, but I am glad I now have the degree.

What led to event design and my Etsy shop:

It all started when my oldest daughter got married at our home last July. Back in the day, when I got married, it was a fairly simple event.  The weddings today are so much more detailed then I could of ever imagined. I saw that my daughter really wanted to make their wedding day special and I had this need as a mom to fulfill her dream.

Once we started checking into prices of all those details, I realized it was going to cost me a fortune! It got me thinking, that the overall concept of wedding décor is just like designing a room.  I could do most of the work myself and save a ton of money and still give my daughter her dream wedding.

We got a lot of inspiration from Etsy, it was my first look at what Etsy had, and I was amazed!  We purchased some items and I was impressed on the quality, the price and the personal touches when we received them in the mail. As I progressed on my projects (6 months of 18 hour days of sewing, designing invitations, menus, table center pieces, you name it!) I would post them on Weddingbycolor blog to share with other brides.

The response I got was over whelming, the brides loved what I was doing for my daughter and started asking me if I would do things for them! After the wedding was over, I took a month off from crafting and designing, I decided to commit to a couple of brides to make their card boxes.  I then slowly decided to branch out and offer them to more brides via Etsy. I have slowly introduced other items and hope to continue to add to my collection. It is a perfect avenue exuse to cre8te things.  This is an ideal situation for me, after a horrible experience of having a retail store in my previous years,  I now can enjoy flexible hours of working from home, and still cre8tve and design.
